My Summer of RAWK!

Aug. 14, 2005, 4:37 p.m.

I am bad about updating this diary. So bad, in fact, that I forget to write about "major life events."

A recap on the last few months:

I moved to New York shortly after graduation, and two weeks later had a falling out with some friends and roommates which meant I had to move out. I now live in a house which is amazing with my roommate and (quite often) his friends.

Since moving in, I have had two visitors from out of state: My godmother, Ethel, and Jordan. Both visits were awesome, and I'm glad I got to see some old friends. Speaking of which, I've recently rekindled a friendship with my best friend from birth, Elizabeth Wrigley-Field (yes, that really is her last name). Unfortunately, we've yet to get the chance to really hang out, but I'm sure it'll happen one of these days.

I spend most Mondays here at Bryant park for the Summer Movie Series. The last two weeks in a row, I've joined my friend Alex and his friends. My boyfriend (I'll explain, I promise!) has also joined us.

Everyone in New York knows everyone else. I swear. Lanier (my boyfriend) went to Columbia. So I introduce him to Alex and friends at the park and, lo and behold, he knows two of them from school. Similarly, my friend Mike introduced me to this woman Deborah right after I moved her (or was it right before?). Turns out she and my boss at my Post Factory/"Fast Track" internship are good friends.

Speaking of which, the work situation has mellowed out. My documentary internship ended because we finished all the work we were scheduled to do. "Fast Track" is in full swing with production, which will end September 9th. I, however, will stay on through the post-production process, which ends in February.

I finished the rough cut of the short film I'm cutting, "Tough Love," and had my meeting for it today. She had a few minor changes to discuss, but overall she loved what I did with it.

I got two reel requests recently, out of the blue, so now I'm working steadily to create a reel I can be proud of. I also learned how to work a digibeta and what all the readings mean from a post-prod color artist named Steve who is working on "Cash in the Attic" at PF. Incidentally, if you want to know about the company I work for, check out the new Jim Jarmish film, "Broken Flowrs." We (not me) cut it. And look out for "Jarhead" (Sam Mendes) and, of course, "Fast Track."

Now, the boyfriend thing.

I have a boyfriend. His name is Lanier, and he asked me out just over a week ago, but we've been seeing each other casually for a while, and before that we were friends. He is, quite simply, the kindest person I have ever met, and genuinely so. He graduated with a degree in music composition from Columbia, and wants to be--you guessed it--a rock star.

I am bad at this stuff, because I don't think I could very accurately explain Lanier. He's a really good person, and very good to me. We spend *so* much time together and yet we always have a good time. We never get tired of each other. I know we'll eventually find things to fight about, we'll eventually get sick of each other, or something will happen and it won't be as perfect as it is right now, but I can't figure out what that'll be. I'm sure it'll happen, but I can't just predict it the way you can sometimes. There's no obvious discrepency--we've been through the sexual history conversation, and it was easy. We've been through the exes...drama (well, his drama, my ex is being pretty damn cool about everything, and I gotta say, Justin's good to have as a friend, so I'm glad it all worked out that way).

Everything is very comfortable and natural, and I like it that way. He's very affectionate, likes introducing me to his friends, and yeah. Things are good. It's the first flush and I am enjoying the hell out of it.

And now for the fun part!

He asked me out in a photobooth, with the help of a stuffed penguin. I kid you not. Right before frame 4, he pulled a penguin out of his backpack with a note attached that read:

"To: Clara
From: Penguin

Will you go out w/Lanier? Check yes or no.

(huge yes box)
(tiny no box)

P.S. if you don't have a pen you can just say it.

-Penguin"

Yeah, I know you all want to see the photostrip (and if you don't, you should):

It's been a crazy mixed-up world since I left college. So many of my friends are going back in the coming weeks, and it's weird knowing that this is my life now...that I'm here to stay...

...but I absolutely love it, and I wouldn't change it for the world.
